Each year, The Menninger Clinic’s Annual Signature Luncheon brings together the Greater Houston community to increase awareness of mental health issues and to raise crucial funding for The Clinic’s research and training programs.
This year's luncheon, set for May 3 at the Westin Galleria, will feature Sean Astin, pictured, as the luncheon’s Signature Speaker.
An award-winning actor, director and producer, Sean is well known for his roles in The Goonies, Rudy and The Lord of the Rings and often portrays unlikely heroes who are ordinary people yet do extraordinary things. Most recently, he starred as Winona Ryder’s endearing on-screen boyfriend, Bob Newby, in the Netflix hit series Stranger Things.
One of Sean’s greatest inspirations is his mother, the late legendary actress Patty Duke, who struggled for years with bipolar disorder before being diagnosed in 1982. Patty was among the first celebrities to publicly speak about her mental illness and later became a lifelong advocate for mental health issues.
Sean will share memories of living with Patty through the depths of her depression and the highs of her mania and will offer a unique perspective into the ways his family fought together for a more hopeful future.
Chaired by Menninger Clinic Foundation board member Kathy Neblett, this year’s luncheon honors The Hamill Foundation, a long-time supporter of Menninger and many other organizations that are working to reduce stigma and alleviate suffering caused by mental illness.
