The Menninger Clinic

The Menninger Mental Health Epicenter Fact Sheet

The Menninger Clinic is building a new hospital on a 50-acre campus in southwest Houston, on South Main Street near South Post Oak Road, a 10 minute drive from The Texas Medical Center (TMC). Construction is expected to begin in fall 2008, with a target completion date of summer 2010. Menninger is also focusing on mental health priorities by creating The Menninger Mental Health Epicenter.

How the Epicenter will benefit Houston and the world:

  • Menninger’s collaboration with TMC institutions, national and international mental health organizations and leading international experts in mental health and other medical specialties will give patients access to the latest research interventions and medical specialty care.
  • The Epicenter will expand mental health services for the Houston and Texas communities, as well as individuals nationally and internationally. The Epicenter will also provide mental health services for the underserved.
  • The Epicenter will train a wide variety of mental health professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and social workers, helping to address the shortage of qualified mental health professionals.
  • The Epicenter will unite mental health organizations and advocates by serving as headquarters and as a site for an international educational effort on mental health. Phase II plans for The Epicenter include office space for these organizations.
  • The Epicenter will educate the public about mental illness, thus helping erase the stigma that prevents many people from seeking treatment for mental illness.
  • Epicenter plans include The Menninger Clinic--an inpatient specialty psychiatric hospital; brain and behavior research center; international leadership and executive program; educational facilities; patient aftercare; administrative buildings and headquarters for other collaborative mental health organizations. The hospital will cover approximately half of the 50-acre campus.

Phase I:

  • Menninger Clinic size: 144 beds; 6 buildings; 209,500 square feet
  • Hospital includes three patient-living treatment buildings, providing space for nine current treatment programs and flexibility for future growth or change in programs; administration and support services; wellness center; chapel; dining center; conference center; meditation and sculpture gardens and facilities management.
  • Patient-living buildings will have a home-like feel. Patient rooms will include private bathrooms with residential-style toilets, full beds and family visitation areas. The central gathering place in each patient treatment unit will resemble a living room and overlook a heavily landscaped backyard terrace.
  • Architect: Kirksey
  • The Clinic has been designed using the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) Green Building Rating System developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The (USGBC) defines “green” facilities as environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.
  • Contractor: Tellepsen
  • The Menninger Clinic will offer specialty inpatient psychiatric diagnostic and treatment to patients with brain, behavioral and addictive disorders.
  • The Clinic will also continue to offer comprehensive diagnostic assessments for persons who have complicated symptoms or desire a second opinion.
  • The Clinic will include eight institutes focused on mental health treatment, research and education. Each institute will be directed by an endowed chair for leading research and treatment efforts.
  • Research and treatment priorities will include: personality disorders, substance abuse and addictions, mood disorders, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders, trauma-related disorders and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Phase II includes:

  • Offices for collaborating mental health organizations
  • Additional educational facilities
  • International leadership and executive programs
  • Patient aftercare services
