U.S.News & World Report ranks Menninger fifth in national survey of best psychiatric hospitals HOUSTON(July 15, 2010)For 20 consecutive years, U.S.News & World Report has ranked The Menninger Clinic in Houston, Texas, among the top 10 psychiatric hospitals in its annual America’s Best Hospitals issue. This year, Menninger is ranked fifth and is the only freestanding psychiatric hospital in Texas on the list. It is also the highest-ranking hospital in the South for psychiatry. “We are pleased and honored to be ranked among the top five psychiatric hospitals once again,” said Ian Aitken, president and CEO of The Menninger Clinic. “Our ranking validates what mental health professionals tell us by continuing to refer their patients to us: Menninger is a trusted source of expertise for assessing, diagnosing and treating patients with complex mental illness.” To create the rankings, U.S.News & World Report asks board-certified psychiatrists nationwide to list the five psychiatric hospitals in the U.S. they consider best for the treatment of difficult cases. Psychiatry is one of four medical specialties measured solely on reputation among those surveyed. Psychiatric hospital rankings include the annual survey results from the most recent three-year period. Menninger specializes in treating adults and adolescents who have a difficult-to-treat psychiatric disorder that may also be complicated by an addiction or other co-occurring disorders. A teaching hospital affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine, Menninger attracts patients from across the country, with 70 percent coming from outside Texas. In the past year, Menninger has expanded its community outreach by establishing relationships with Texas Children’s Hospital and Windsor Village United Methodist Church to provide mental health care in underserved areas of the city. We are committed to pursuing such partnerships with other behavioral health organizations in the future,” Aitken added. To help strengthen this growing network of integrated mental health services, The Clinic is in the final stages of a capital campaign to raise funds to build The Mental Health Epicenter, which will be constructed just 10 minutes from the Texas Medical Center. Each year, consumers and health professionals look to surveys such as those found in U.S.News & World Report for information on top-quality treatment providers.
