Personality update attracts record audience
The July 14 national conference call featuring Menninger Chief of Staff John Oldham, MD, MS, attracted a record audience of more than 100 listeners, who tuned in to hear him discuss the proposed changes related to personality disorders (PDs) in the upcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual’s fifth edition (DSM-5). Dr. Oldham is a member of the DSM-5 personality and personality disorders work group.

Dr. Oldham discussed the pros and cons of the dimensional and categorical perspectives of personality disorders; reasons to keep and discard the Axis I and/or Axis II designations; revising the definition of PD; assessing personality by personality type matching; and outlining personality trait domains.
He also addressed the next steps for the work group, which include literature reviews, validation of 10 existing PDs and evaluation of the clinical utility of the revised PD definition.

A two-part recording of the entire call is now available on the Menninger website.

A nationally recognized expert in borderline personality disorder, Dr. Oldham is the president-elect of the American Psychiatric Association and executive vice chair for Clinical Affairs and Development and professor, Menninger Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Baylor College of Medicine.
