Menninger is a leading psychiatric center dedicated to treating individuals with mood, personality, anxiety and addictive disorders, teaching mental health professionals and advancing mental healthcare through research.

Professionals in Crisis Program

Treatment assessments
An inpatient interdisciplinary assessment at Menninger is a focused diagnostic service designed to assess medical, legal, business and religious professionals struggling with issues including:

  • Drug or alcohol addiction
  • Psychiatric and co-occurring disorders
  • Sexual boundary violations with patients, clients, co-workers or parishioners
  • Disruptive behavior in the workplace
  • Career stress and burnout

The five-day assessment determines whether the professional is impaired in one or more of these areas.

In addition, the patient and the referring professional receive a timely written report with results of the assessment and recommendations:

  • For continuation of practice or work based on level of individual’s impairment and safety of patients, clients and others
  • For a treatment action plan when appropriate
  • Requested by state health program, licensing board or hospital medical executive committee
  • Requested by referring professional, referring treater or family members

Hospital-based assessment
The assessment conducted on the Professionals in Crisis unit allows the patient to receive 24-hour supervision, observation and support from nursing staff among fellow professionals who share similar issues. The cost is $1,500 per day.

What to expect
Before admission, goals for the assessment and a plan for communication are established jointly by the incoming patient, the referring professional and an Admissions coordinator. The Admissions coordinator also gathers the necessary background information for the assessment team.

Each assessment includes:

  • Comprehensive psychological testing
  • A psychiatric consultation
  • Psychosocial assessments
  • An evaluation by a certified addiction counselor with consultation by an addictionologist when needed
  • Medical and neuropsychiatric workup as needed
  • Access to other Menninger specialists

Valuable benefits

  • One stop for comprehensive psychological, addictions and medical assessments
  • Flexibility to customize the assessment to meet the goals of the referring professional
  • Timely communication with the referent, including a summary report with recommendations for diversion boards
  • A team of on-site clinicians experienced in working with professionals and their needs
  • Certified addiction counselors

Professionals in Crisis
