All Adolescent Treatment Program (ATP) patients undergo psychological testing. Our psychologists
take a collaborative approach to psychological assessment. Prior to testing, teenagers and their family members develop questions about themselves, their struggles and their strengths. These questions shape the testing process. Personality and cognitive tests are then administered in a standardized fashion.
Throughout the assessment, we invite patients to be curious about the test results. During the family feedback meeting, family members have the chance to do the same. Our collaborative assessment approach helps both teenagers and their families gain insights that guide them through treatment and beyond.
At times, adolescents on the ATP unit will be referred for neuropsychological evaluation. A form of psychological testing, neuropsychological evaluation includes a comprehensive review of cognitive functions, including general intellect, attention and executive functions, language, memory and learning, visual-perceptual and motor abilities. and academic achievement.
Common referrals for neuropsychological evaluation include concerns about learning and attention problems, autism spectrum disorders and neurological impairment/injury (e.g., epilepsy, traumatic brain injury). Evaluation results may be used to confirm or clarify a diagnosis, facilitate educational planning, establish a baseline of cognitive functioning, or document changes in cognitive functioning since prior examinations and/or make treatment recommendations.
The Diagnostic Conference
A diagnostic conference is held after a patient completes two weeks in the program. Before the conference, the treatment team meets in advance with any referring clinicians
, educational consultants or other professionals as needed to discuss the patient’s case.
At the conference, team members meet with these professionals, the teen and the teen’s parents, typically in person but often via teleconference, and present a 10-page report on their clinical findings and recommendations for further treatment. They also answer any questions about the adolescent’s progress thus far.
During a separate meeting, the team psychologist or psychiatrist delivers the same information to the patient in an age-appropriate way, while the team continues discussions about the teen’s progress during other family feedback meetings.
