HOUSTON—The Menninger Clinic, one of America’s best hospitals in psychiatry, is the only psychiatric hospital among all of the Houston area’s Best Hospitals in U.S. News & World Report’s first metro rankings. The new rankings represent the top hospitals from 16 specialties in or near major cities with populations of 1 million and more. The longstanding national rankings will be announced in July.
Menninger’s services address Houston’s needs
As a national psychiatric hospital specializing in treatment of complex mental illness, The Menninger Clinic serves 35 percent of patients from Texas and 65 percent of patients from 49 states and international communities. All of Menninger’s programs are open to Texans. In addition, Menninger offers several services especially for Houstonians needing mental health care, including The Gathering Place, a supportive clubhouse for adults with mental illness, psychiatric diagnosis and treatment at three clinics operated by Texas Children’s Pediatric Associates and a range of outpatient treatment for other local residents as well as Windsor Village United Methodist Church’s congregation.
Menninger is expanding local services, including working with Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County to provide psychiatry services for a new partial hospital program for adults at The Gathering Place, 5310 S. Willow Drive.
“Our philosophy follows what co-founder Dr. William Menninger said years ago that the true measure of any community lies in how it provides for its most disabled members. We want to collaborate with other hospitals and organizations to address the needs of Houston as well as to discover better diagnostic methods, treatments and prevention programs to improve lives everywhere,” said Ian Aitken, president and chief executive officer, The Menninger Clinic.
About the rankings
U.S. News & World Report created Best Hospital rankings in 1991 to identify hospitals skilled in handling the most difficult cases. Menninger has ranked among the best in psychiatry for 21 consecutive years.
The new metro area rankings use the data collected from 2010-2011 Best Hospitals to provide a guide to healthcare consumers who may not require the special expertise found only at a nationally ranked Best Hospital. To be ranked in a metro area, a hospital had to demonstrate a record of high performance by scoring in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one of the 16 medical specialties.
“Houston is fortunate to have so many quality hospitals, and we are proud to be recognized as the only hospital dedicated solely to psychiatry in the metro rankings,” Aitken said.
