Brain Stimulation Services

Some adult patients at Menninger battle treatment-resistant depression and other psychiatric issues that might benefit from therapies that stimulate the brain. We offer such therapies as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to patients ages 18 and older.

ECT Consultations

To access this service, outpatient providers - whether a medical or mental health professional - or individuals struggling with mental illness may request an ECT consultation via email or by calling 713-275-5328.

The first thing I, and others, noticed was the laughter. Even before I had finished all the treatments, I was laughing again. Sometimes a lot. I don't remember the last time I laughed before ECT. - former patient

Treatment Indications

The principal diagnostic indications for which ECT is safe and effective include:

  • Major depression (unipolar or bipolar)
  • Mania
  • Schizophrenia
  • Catatonia (benign or malignant)
ECT may be used prior to a trial of medication, particularly in the following situations:
  • When there is a need for a rapid, definitive treatment response;
  • When the risks of other treatments outweigh the risks of ECT;
  • When a patient has a history of poor medication response, medication intolerance or a good ECT response in one or more previous episode(s) of illness; or
  • When the patient expresses a preference for ECT.
