The Professionals Program (PIC) at Menninger offers a safe, structured environment in a hospital setting. Each patient’s comprehensive, specialized treatment plan is designed by our experienced, caring mental health clinicians.
Length of treatment in PIC depends on several factors, including symptom severity and progress toward goals. The average length of stay is four to six weeks.
Life in the Program
of PIC is comfortable and secure. Treatment team offices are located on the unit, so the patient has plenty of opportunities to interact with the care team. Team members include full-time program-based psychiatrists who are board certified in internal medicine and addiction medicine as well as psychiatry. Nursing care is provided 24/7 by registered nurses.
Menninger practices what is called milieu therapy
, which means that the total environment is part of the healing process. While the program is structured, unscheduled time helps teach work-life balance and gives a chance to socialize with peers; relax with a hobby; or participate in a variety of activities. Unscheduled time also gives patients time to process and reflect on what they've learned during their stay on PIC.
While electronic devices such as cell phones, smart phones, tablets and personal computers are not permitted, computers with e-mail access are available on the unit for patient use. Mail is delivered each weekday.
The interior of the PIC building looks much like a co-ed university residence hall with patient rooms on a common hallway. There are spacious common areas with sofas and tables and a TV/game area. Other rooms include meeting areas, a nourishment center with snacks and refreshments, outdoor terrace and laundry.
All bedrooms are private and include private bathrooms; some bedrooms are handicapped accessible. All have built-in desks, upholstered reading chairs and personal clothes storage.
Patients may socialize in common areas and not in one another’s bedrooms. Unless there are safety concerns for a given individual, all patients eat together in the main dining room with unit staff.
On-campus amenities include a Café that serves Starbucks® coffee, trauma-sensitive yoga, 60-minute massage therapy sessions (additional fees apply), covered walking paths, a peaceful meditation garden, a large labyrinth, a volleyball court and a saltwater pool. We also have an impressive Wellness Center complete with a full-size basketball court and top-of-the-line fitness equipment. Weekly one-on-one personal fitness training sessions are included.
Atmosphere and Dress
At Menninger, the patients and staff function together as a community. Patients hold a weekly meeting to welcome new patients and staff, say goodbye to those leaving and to discuss issues of interest.
Patients are encouraged to dress comfortably. Staff members dress in business and business casual attire. Patients tidy their own rooms and launder their clothes.
During the first week to 10 days at Menninger, a patient’s needs are assessed and an individual treatment plan
is created. All patients receive individual psychotherapy with a highly experienced clinician three times per week. Patients are expected to take personal responsibility for their treatment and are involved in every phase, from planning to discharge. A Patient Education Forum is held each Saturday morning for all Clinic patients as well.
